Prometheus

I am going to rant a little about the movie Prometheus. Firstly, I would like to say that I really like sci-fi movies, especially the ones with alien life forms, so I am a little biased. However, that being said the movie was not as great as it could have been if not for many illogical things and other inaccuracies. Lets talk about some things that I thought were stupid/weird.

Space travel: as you may know the speed of light is currently considered the fastest speed there is. The closest star system from earth is Alpha Centauri. If you were to travel to that star system at the speed of light it would take you approximately 4.24 years. Yet in the movie they were in cryogenic capsules for 2 years and 4 months. Now obviously they were not flying at the speed of light, they must have traveled a lot faster. So what is the problem you may ask. The problem is that it is the future, shouldn’t they be teleporting or using wormholes to travel? Because right now it just seems that hey were traveling with some regular old technology, but just many times faster than the speed of light. I mean where the 2 years come from? Also why bother using cryogenics fur such short periods?

Weapons: So you are going on an exploration mission to an alien planet, potentially inhabited with a super intelligent aliens. Then you think to yourself – flamethrowers! WTF? Are you seriously suggesting that the best weapon you could think of is a flamethrower? What if there is no oxygen in the atmosphere, ever though about that? What if there is too much oxygen and you blow yourself up? What about strong winds, you can’t really use it if the wind is blowing towards you… All they needed were some future AK-47’s.

Technology: Why do super intelligent aliens have such crappy holograms? I mean in the scene were the aliens are running in the corridor and one gets decapitated. That hologram technology does not belong in a CV of super intelligent aliens. Also why do they use only single color holograms? I mean in the scene where they show a map of universe, why is it not colored? Or are they are color blind? The human video transmission technology is crappy as well, I mean it is 2012 and we already have a pretty decent video quality. I imagine that in next ~70 years we will be able to achieve something really spectacular. Yet those future humans had pretty poor video quality.

Weird parts: Why did those aliens in the hologram tried to run into tombs filled with infected jars inside them? They were guaranteed to die there. Also how did the aborted squid thingy grow into a 5-ton monster without having any food in that medical room? Why didn’t those aliens have any kind of robots or automation? I mean instead of flying their ships themselves they could have sent them to earth on auto-pilot or couldn’t they?

All in all, the movie was very entertaining, but lacked reality and was pretty predictable. Try harder next time Ridley!

okay, desselect it one by one:

    > why bother using cryogenics fur such short periods?

Because you wouldn’t like to sit for 2 weeks in a small cabin doing nothing, having nothing to eat, and no video games. Cryogene, and save two weeks of your live! Wait, that was 2 years and not 2 weeks?

    > What if there is no oxygen in the atmosphere, ever though about that?

Well their board computer definitely performed spectral analysis of the atmosphere’s chemical composition before tuning their close-combat weaponry for optimal performance as appropriate. And that was no regular flame-thrower but actually a magnetic-field-controlled ultra-hot plasma supergun.

    > are they color blind?

No way – their vision is vastly superior to the vision of pathetic homo sapiens – only their lightwave spectrum does not overlap with our. I.e. they are rely on infrared, ultraviolet, x-ray and alpha-particle radiation.

    > how did the aborted squid thingy grow into a 5-ton monster without having any food in that medical room?

Easy. Initially it was a larvae with unbelievable large reserve of highly-condensed nutrients. Then it also was able to feed on plastic, electricity and metal.

    > Why didn’t those aliens have any kind of robots or automation?

Unions boycotted excessive use of automation in a bid to save working places. North Koreans don’t have robots either, right? Because they have strong unions and a inexpensive human life price rates.

    > Instead of flying their ships themselves they could have sent them to earth on auto-pilot or couldn’t they?

It is a cultural and religious obligation for that specific alien caste. They fear no death because they have their brains backuped periodically (and their bodies restored with all personality/memories intact upon a confirmed KIA), but that backup is lost if you demonstrate fear in a combat or inclination to perform your military duty to high standards.
